Mental health

How to do a social media detox the right way and improve your mental health.

When I signed up for social media, I did not sign up for the drama and toxicity that comes with it. I really can’t remember ticking the “I agree” box to  comparisons, competitions and arguments!

Social media has its blessings, but I cannot deny that it sometimes affects my productivity and growth. The first thing I do when I wake up every morning, is to reach out for my phone to check my email and notifications, a habit I’m beginning to detest.

I’m on a personal development journey, so I’m becoming more and more intentional, I’m starting to practice minimalism and mindfulness. These new healthy lifestyle practices have given me more clarity, and are also shining the light on certain areas in my life that need decluttering.

In the last couple of weeks, I have read over 10 articles from people who have become weary of their social media addiction and have decided to take the bull by the horns and quit social media completely!
I have contemplated leaving too, but I know that’s not the answer.

Social media is not the devil, it’s not the cause of all our problems, that’s why I would never preach “pack your things and get off the internet”. We are social beings, we need these platforms to thrive.

Social media has brought us closer and made messaging a lot easier, so thinking we can live without it, is just a mirage!  For starters, it’s by virtue of social media and the Good ol internet that I am able to bring this content to you.

This is why I would rather suggest a  social media detox instead. A social media detox is your best bet when it comes to improving your mood and letting go of some of that anxiety. A social media detox is more about decluttering, cleansing and replacing bad habits with new, healthy ones.
The key is to be intentional and deliberate about it. It’s really easy to do!
